Showing the Grace of God

Showing the Grace of God

Showing Grace. Have you ever found yourself grappling with the tension between showing grace and standing firm in truth? Join me, Rick, on Renewed Mindsets, as I share a stirring personal story that brings us face-to-face with this dilemma. We'll explore the transformative power of grace — a force that moves us beyond the comfort of a free pass and into the realm of genuine change and confrontation with sin. Inspired by the life of Jesus Christ, we unpack the critical balance of grace and truth, scrutinizing our culture's diluted interpretation of grace and rediscovering its role in our spiritual growth and accountability within the Christian community. So, grab your coffee and prepare to embrace grace in a way that aligns with God's loving discipline and our own personal development.

In a riveting segment titled "Pick a Hill," I delve into the profound essence and respect of names, particularly within the sphere of faith. We'll reflect on the awe surrounding God's name in Hebrew culture and the life-altering implications of invoking the name of Jesus. I'll break down the true meaning behind taking the Lord's name in vain, journeying beyond clichéd expressions to the depth of our heart cries to God. Moreover, we'll discuss the foundational role of God's grace, as per 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, distinguishing salvation through grace from the works we do out of gratitude and love for God. Tune in for a heartfelt discussion that weaves together our spiritual gifts with the reverence of the sacred names we cherish.

00:00:01.100 --> 00:00:07.333
Today on Renewed Mindsets, I explore how faith, wisdom and everyday life intersect.

00:00:07.333 --> 00:00:18.012
Join me as I uncover timeless truths and gain insight on how to live a life that truly reflects the heart of Jesus in every interaction and every decision that we make.

00:00:18.012 --> 00:00:28.727
Father God, I ask you for your guidance and wisdom as we talk about obedience, grace and the art of picking our battles wisely, all through the timeless example set by Jesus Christ.

00:00:28.727 --> 00:00:36.072
In a world that's filled with noise and conflict, we recognize how hard it can be to obey your will and extend grace to others.

00:00:36.072 --> 00:00:39.265
It requires discernment and humility.

00:00:39.265 --> 00:00:46.465
Amen, people, grab your coffee, get comfortable, because we're about to hear some truth.

00:00:46.465 --> 00:00:48.521
Let's go, boys.

00:00:48.521 --> 00:01:01.265
Hey, welcome to Renewed Mindsets, where we study the basics of the faith through the lens of our middle-aged experiences.

00:01:01.866 --> 00:01:02.347
I'm Rick.

00:01:02.347 --> 00:01:13.724
Welcome to the show where I help you, gen Xers and millennials, navigate spiritually through a world that looks nothing like we expected back, when cars were square and mullets were totally awesome.

00:01:13.724 --> 00:01:15.846
I am so glad you're here.

00:01:15.846 --> 00:01:24.108
Last week, I got a text from a friend of mine and said thank you for showing me grace.

00:01:24.108 --> 00:01:32.225
Now, this time, those words really stuck with me for several days.

00:01:32.225 --> 00:01:38.843
My friend was referring to something small, something that didn't require much effort from me.

00:01:38.843 --> 00:01:41.888
But did I really show him grace?

00:01:41.888 --> 00:01:50.171
Maybe, maybe not, because what does it truly mean to show grace to somebody else?

00:01:51.581 --> 00:01:59.474
We thank you so much for this bountiful harvest of dominoes, kfc and the always delicious Taco Bell.

00:01:59.474 --> 00:02:06.612
I just want to take time to say thank you for my family, my two beautiful, beautiful, handsome, striking sons.

00:02:07.159 --> 00:02:15.650
Okay, that's not the kind of grace I'm talking about, but shake and bake Grace is a word that we use a lot, but we struggle to define it.

00:02:15.650 --> 00:02:26.114
We celebrate it and we praise it, but I believe that a lot of times we just misunderstand it, especially when it comes to showing grace to others.

00:02:26.114 --> 00:02:40.771
I think what we mean when we say that we should show grace is that we should give people a pass, and these passes usually relate to things that have nothing to do with spirituality.

00:02:40.771 --> 00:02:59.894
I mean, we consider it grace when we allow somebody to see our messy house, but when it comes to applying grace to spiritual matters, we tend to believe that we should never assert ourselves, never stand up for truth, never call someone out for self-destructive behavior.

00:02:59.894 --> 00:03:11.986
It's difficult to reconcile grace and truth, even though those are exact characteristics that describe Jesus In John 1, 14,.

00:03:11.986 --> 00:03:17.811
So the Word became human and made His home among us.

00:03:17.811 --> 00:03:26.655
He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness, and we have seen His glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son.

00:03:26.655 --> 00:03:34.390
Our inability to reconcile grace and truth is pretty much due to our culture.

00:03:34.390 --> 00:03:43.504
I mean, our culture scoffs at the idea of holding somebody accountable or believing that love can be anything other than unconditional acceptance.

00:03:43.504 --> 00:03:55.354
Our understanding of grace is being infiltrated by culture and, as a result, its profound meaning and its transformative power are being stolen by the enemy.

00:03:56.740 --> 00:04:02.573
Grace is not a free pass that allows us to do whatever we want to under the guise of Christ.

00:04:02.573 --> 00:04:05.224
To do whatever we want to under the guise of Christ.

00:04:05.224 --> 00:04:17.920
Grace, the undeserved favor of God poured out through us with faith in Christ, is a powerful catalyst for change when it's received correctly, and it teaches us how to live.

00:04:17.920 --> 00:04:21.449
The gospel destroys the very motivation for sin.

00:04:21.449 --> 00:04:34.564
It completely eliminates the desire and our reason to live according to our own whims, and anybody who claims that the gospel encourages sin simply hasn't understood it yet or experienced its power.

00:04:34.564 --> 00:04:40.682
There's a distinction, there's a fine line between a free pass and grace.

00:04:40.682 --> 00:04:49.420
A free pass says I see your sin, but I won't acknowledge it, I'll pretend that it doesn't exist.

00:04:49.420 --> 00:05:00.565
We often mistake this for love, but in reality it's self-love, because by giving a free pass to somebody, we choose what's easier for ourselves.

00:05:00.927 --> 00:05:12.312
Instead of enduring the temporary discomfort of addressing a difficult subject with a friend, we should measure our acts of grace by how God extends grace to us.

00:05:12.312 --> 00:05:22.471
In his grace, god says I see your sin, the Holy Spirit convicts you specifically of your sin.

00:05:22.471 --> 00:05:29.007
I've provided a way for your specific sin to be dealt with through Christ's sacrifice on the cross.

00:05:29.007 --> 00:05:37.071
You don't have to cover it up, you don't have to ignore it, you don't have to try to handle it on your own.

00:05:37.071 --> 00:05:41.624
Because of Christ, you have the opportunity to be free from your sin.

00:05:41.624 --> 00:05:45.173
Confess and repent and you'll be forgiven.

00:05:45.173 --> 00:05:47.026
I will help you change.

00:05:48.740 --> 00:05:53.172
Grace directly confronts sin and identifies it out of love.

00:05:53.172 --> 00:06:05.971
It's simple God loves us enough to rescue us from the pit of sin, to discipline us and to refine us, and to replace bondage and despair with joy.

00:06:05.971 --> 00:06:11.091
The love that God has for us is what makes grace so powerful.

00:06:11.091 --> 00:06:20.713
The favor of our God is bestowed upon us and it compels us to present ourselves as instruments of righteousness.

00:06:20.713 --> 00:06:25.966
Grace doesn't excuse us, but grace changes us.

00:06:25.966 --> 00:06:32.668
So what does it mean to show grace to somebody else Really?

00:06:32.668 --> 00:06:41.447
It means recognizing each other as new creations in Christ and acknowledge that the grace we received at salvation is constantly working in our lives.

00:06:41.447 --> 00:06:54.062
Philippians 1.6 says I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

00:06:54.062 --> 00:07:02.060
We are all a work in progress, but that doesn't equate to giving everybody a free pass.

00:07:02.060 --> 00:07:30.939
Being a work in progress means continually engaging with the gift that God has given us the ability to recognize sin and address it with gentleness and truth, and to remind our friends of the path of confession and repentance, to cheer them up as they're changing, and to do it while cultivating a deep and intimate relationship with them that's rooted in love for one another.

00:07:33.050 --> 00:07:37.920
Galatians 6, 1 and 2 describes the grace giver led by the Spirit.

00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:50.680
It says, brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you, who live by the Spirit, should restore that person gently, but watch yourselves, or you may also be tempted.

00:07:50.680 --> 00:07:56.141
Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

00:07:56.141 --> 00:07:59.999
That is what it means to show grace to one another.

00:07:59.999 --> 00:08:13.077
Showing grace this way doesn't enjoy pointing it out we shouldn't enjoy pointing out sin and it doesn't pride itself on being someone that tells the truth.

00:08:13.077 --> 00:08:23.442
Someone who practices grace according to Galatians and God's inspiration, is deeply invested in the spiritual well-being of someone else.

00:08:23.442 --> 00:08:36.892
They're aware of their own spiritual poverty without Christ, and we approach other people with humility and we approach them with a willingness to go that extra mile to make sure that they're healed.

00:08:36.892 --> 00:08:48.250
And, most importantly, a grace giver puts themselves in a position to receive the same truth and the same grace from friends that they're committed to giving.

00:08:48.250 --> 00:08:58.655
How many times have you robbed a friend of yours of their spiritual growth by giving them a free pass instead of extending grace?

00:08:58.655 --> 00:09:16.124
And how often, oh my gosh, I hate to even ask how often do we cheat ourselves by seeking a free pass rather than have someone tell us the truth and give us the grace that can call us to change?

00:09:16.124 --> 00:09:21.677
Romans 12, 6-8.

00:09:21.710 --> 00:09:23.451
In His grace, god has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.

00:09:23.451 --> 00:09:27.592
In his grace, god has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.

00:09:27.592 --> 00:09:34.636
Therefore, if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with much faith, as God has given you.

00:09:34.636 --> 00:09:38.298
If your gift is serving others, serve them well.

00:09:38.298 --> 00:09:40.941
If you're a teacher, teach well.

00:09:40.941 --> 00:09:44.403
If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging.

00:09:44.403 --> 00:09:47.625
If it's giving, give generously.

00:09:47.625 --> 00:09:53.268
If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously.

00:09:53.268 --> 00:10:01.868
And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

00:10:04.058 --> 00:10:05.846
Sometimes we overlook the smallest details.

00:10:05.846 --> 00:10:11.115
In his grace, god has given us all different gifts to excel in.

00:10:11.115 --> 00:10:23.210
When I'm unable to see the fruit of his spirit or the spiritual gifts operating in my life, it usually means that I've strayed from grace.

00:10:23.210 --> 00:10:26.466
How are God's gifts working in your life right now?

00:10:26.466 --> 00:10:27.068
Are you in a rut?

00:10:27.068 --> 00:10:29.235
Do you feel stuck?

00:10:29.235 --> 00:10:45.899
If that's true, it might be a sign that his grace is no longer sufficient for you, that God's grace is no longer enough, and if that's the case, it's imperative that you and I right now address that core issue.

00:10:45.899 --> 00:10:48.804
What are you going to find there?

00:10:48.804 --> 00:10:54.442
The only foundation worthy of building our lives on is Jesus.

00:10:54.442 --> 00:10:57.859
1 Corinthians, 3, 10, and 11.

00:10:57.859 --> 00:11:02.660
It's in our human nature to add our personal touch to things.

00:11:02.660 --> 00:11:07.139
Religion often adds more rules and regulations.

00:11:07.139 --> 00:11:10.123
Like we can improve upon god's grace.

00:11:11.107 --> 00:11:19.054
Salvation is based on fully believing that god's grace is all we need to reach the kingdom of heaven and live with him forever.

00:11:19.054 --> 00:11:38.561
Having faith in god means believing that his grace is always sufficient, and when we try to earn God's favor through our actions, it should be to honor the gift that he gave us, recognizing that we can't earn it because any other foundation is going to crumble and fall.

00:11:38.561 --> 00:11:51.182
I'm in need of God's grace, and when I get God's grace, it makes me want to get out and use the gifts and talents that he gave me to help others.

00:11:51.182 --> 00:12:04.163
His grace is sufficient for my salvation, but the very fact that I have grace in my life because of God makes me want to get out and work for him.

00:12:04.163 --> 00:12:08.931
It's not salvation through works, people, it's salvation through grace.

00:12:08.931 --> 00:12:13.337
It's works through appreciation and love for God.

00:12:16.562 --> 00:12:18.205
God, grant me more grace today.

00:12:18.205 --> 00:12:22.894
Grace to overcome the sins that easily entangle me.

00:12:22.894 --> 00:12:32.451
Help me refine the message of my life so that others can see your love and your grace, jesus, in me.

00:12:32.451 --> 00:12:34.936
Grace is the message.

00:12:34.936 --> 00:12:42.234
Through grace we can overlook the sins and shortcoming of others to offer them God's love.

00:12:42.234 --> 00:12:47.423
Grace seals the path of repentance for genuine hearts.

00:12:47.423 --> 00:12:49.548
Grace seals the path of repentance for genuine hearts.

00:12:49.548 --> 00:12:51.235
Do you love Jesus?

00:12:51.235 --> 00:12:52.599
Do you love Jesus today?

00:12:52.599 --> 00:12:58.721
Thank him again for his amazing grace.

00:12:58.721 --> 00:13:03.485
Look for it in your life today.

00:13:03.485 --> 00:13:13.014
I'm encouraging you right now to ask the Lord for more grace so that we can be gracious to others and share the gospel as it spreads throughout the world.

00:13:13.014 --> 00:13:16.561
1 Corinthians, 15, 10,.

00:13:16.561 --> 00:13:28.705
But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favor on me, and not without results, for I have worked harder than any other of the apostles.

00:13:28.705 --> 00:13:33.539
Yet it wasn't me but God who was working through me.

00:13:33.539 --> 00:13:43.123
By his grace, friends, let us truly show and receive grace.

00:13:47.850 --> 00:13:50.937
Welcome to a new segment that I like to call Pick a Hill.

00:13:50.937 --> 00:13:54.692
You know, like, is that the hill you want to die on?

00:13:54.692 --> 00:13:59.202
It's one where we'll check out a weird world of religious nitpicking.

00:13:59.202 --> 00:14:09.317
Come on in as we dive into the tiny details of faith, breaking down the stuff that seems big to some but might not mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of eternity.

00:14:09.317 --> 00:14:17.480
We'll check out things from arguments about the color of the curtains over the baptistry to the correct way to say some of those ancient names.

00:14:17.480 --> 00:14:25.417
We'll untangle the threads of religious nitpicking, thinking about what really matters when it comes to God's will for our lives.

00:14:25.417 --> 00:14:29.332
For the first topic, we're just going to go deep, deep, deep here.

00:14:31.136 --> 00:14:36.173
Now I'm going to be talking a lot about the South, but really this is really the whole country.

00:14:36.173 --> 00:14:46.457
But people in the South and the United States often have a unique perspective on certain aspects of life, including the importance of names and titles.

00:14:46.457 --> 00:14:54.840
Now, one important distinction is that many people in the South understand that there's a difference between a name and a title.

00:14:54.840 --> 00:15:06.374
They recognize that, while a name is a personal identifier, a title is a designation that carries significance and often implies certain responsibilities or roles, applies certain responsibilities or roles.

00:15:06.374 --> 00:15:19.184
Like my name is Rick and I hold various titles, such as Dad, host of this podcast, jedi, master.

00:15:19.184 --> 00:15:21.187
You know all the basic titles.

00:15:21.187 --> 00:15:34.769
These titles reflect the various roles and responsibilities that I have in my life Now.

00:15:34.769 --> 00:15:39.110
In the same way, the term El E-L is a title that means God in Hebrew.

00:15:43.990 --> 00:15:47.855
In biblical times, titles like El Baal referred to gods like Baal, who the Israelites turned to in worship alongside of Yahweh.

00:15:47.855 --> 00:16:08.504
In the context of religion, god, king and Lord are all titles that hold a significant meaning and while these titles are widely recognized and respected, it's essential to understand that our God, the Father's actual name is Yahweh.

00:16:08.504 --> 00:16:24.602
When God's word came in the flesh, like in his son, his name was Yeshua in Hebrew, also known as Jesus in the Greek or Jesus in English.

00:16:24.602 --> 00:16:33.198
It doesn't matter what language is spoken, because Jesus' name remains the same and he knows his name in all languages.

00:16:33.198 --> 00:16:44.779
The Israelites, even to this day, hold a great reverence for God's name Yahweh, to the point that they refrain from even writing or speaking it.

00:16:44.779 --> 00:16:57.557
They came up with the name Hashim or Hashem, meaning the name as a way to refer to him without directly uttering his holy name, and they only do that on specific occasions.

00:16:57.557 --> 00:17:04.613
So this demonstrates the immense power and holiness that's associated with God's name.

00:17:06.434 --> 00:17:17.207
In the new covenant it's proclaimed that only in the name of Jesus can demons be cast out, the sick be healed, the people be born again.

00:17:17.207 --> 00:17:24.467
So when somebody speaks the name of Jesus, demons tremble and angels are called into action.

00:17:24.467 --> 00:17:36.425
So using the name of Jesus without cause or frustration or anger can be seen as taking his name, his holy name, in vain.

00:17:36.425 --> 00:17:44.183
But instead individuals need to reserve the use of his name for significant purposes and reverence.

00:17:44.183 --> 00:17:52.044
Now, on the other hand, saying oh God is not really considered taking the Lord's name in vain.

00:17:52.044 --> 00:17:54.999
Oh, I'm going to get shot for that one.

00:17:54.999 --> 00:18:02.124
Many, many people cry out to God in times of need and they utter phrases like oh God, help me.

00:18:03.369 --> 00:18:13.164
The term oh God is often used by people from the South and elsewhere to express a plea for assistance or guidance from a higher power or from God.

00:18:13.164 --> 00:18:23.519
It's important to recognize that when people say oh God in such a context, they're not using it flippantly and they're not really being disrespectful.

00:18:23.519 --> 00:18:42.369
Now there may be some confusion in the world, in the United States, in the South, about the distinction between using O God or O Lord and potentially violating the commandment against taking the Lord's name in vain.

00:18:42.369 --> 00:18:57.333
But we need to understand that these phrases are essentially the same and their intentions and usage determine whether they're respectful or disrespectful, and it's all about the individual's heart and the intent behind the words they speak.

00:18:58.536 --> 00:19:08.122
Now, all throughout history, there have been many lords and kings, but Jesus Christ is considered as the Lord of all lords and the King of all kings.

00:19:08.122 --> 00:19:20.333
And in the same way, various gods have been mentioned, both biblically and throughout history, yet there's only one God Almighty, the ruler of all things and the creator of heaven and earth.

00:19:20.333 --> 00:19:23.538
The power lies in his name alone.

00:19:23.538 --> 00:19:37.035
So people in the South, people in the United States, people around the world, like many others, recognize the importance of names and titles and they understand that the power and sanctity of God's actual name, yahweh.

00:19:37.035 --> 00:19:39.517
In the new covenant, the name is Jesus.

00:19:39.517 --> 00:20:11.910
It has incredible power and using it flippantly or disrespectfully is considered taking his holy name in vain, especially if you add H in the middle of it.

00:20:11.910 --> 00:20:14.214
That is what's offensive.

00:20:14.915 --> 00:20:21.636
It's crucial to approach the name of Jesus with reverence and only use it with purpose and sincerity.

00:20:21.636 --> 00:20:26.089
And really, what it boils down to is what are you talking about?

00:20:26.089 --> 00:20:28.192
What are you saying?

00:20:28.192 --> 00:20:51.948
I mean, here in these last days, we're supposed to be speaking, we're supposed to be focused and speaking and trying to get people to hear the good news, hear the gospel, get people to accept Jesus Christ so that they can spend eternity in heaven with him and not burning in a lake of fire.

00:20:51.948 --> 00:20:58.522
And here we are overly focused on something that really doesn't matter.

00:20:58.522 --> 00:21:03.878
I mean, does it matter if you take the Lord's name in vain, absolutely?

00:21:03.878 --> 00:21:11.262
Are we supposed to be sitting here debating whether or not saying oh God is breaking a commandment?

00:21:11.262 --> 00:21:24.251
Because, let me tell you, there are so many things in this world right now that are a bit more important than an argument between two people on whether our saying oh God is going to break a commandment or not.

00:21:24.251 --> 00:21:31.257
It really just seems like a waste of time and effort, but that's kind of what the devil has us focused on.

00:21:31.257 --> 00:21:45.724
If we're focused on these kind of issues, then we're really not focused on the things that are important, which is getting people to believe and receive the Holy Spirit and be born again.

00:21:48.031 --> 00:21:49.721
Don't fall into the trap, people, just be respectful.

00:21:49.721 --> 00:21:50.605
That's what it boils down to Again.

00:21:50.605 --> 00:21:53.054
Don't fall into the trap, people, just be respectful.

00:21:53.054 --> 00:21:54.377
That's what it boils down to.

00:21:54.377 --> 00:22:07.184
Be respectful Join me next week as I discuss assigned seats and whether or not you should punch a guest in the mouth if they sit where you normally sit.

00:22:07.184 --> 00:22:15.852
