00:00:04.650 --> 00:00:06.333
Coming up on Renewed Mindsets.

00:00:06.333 --> 00:00:12.705
Today, I'm going to talk about something that's pretty cool Understanding God's will.

00:00:12.705 --> 00:00:18.150
You know that feeling when you're trying to figure out what God wants from you.

00:00:18.150 --> 00:00:31.990
Yeah, that we're exploring how to recognize those little nudges from above, to find your path and to live in sync with something so much bigger than just yourself.

00:00:31.990 --> 00:00:34.942
This is going to be good.

00:00:34.942 --> 00:00:37.868
You know what comes next.

00:00:37.868 --> 00:00:39.813
Let's go.

00:00:39.953 --> 00:00:54.707
Boys, boys, hey, welcome to Renewed Mindsets, where we study the basics of the faith through the lens of our middle-aged experiences.

00:00:54.707 --> 00:00:54.887
I'm Rick.

00:00:54.887 --> 00:01:05.551
Welcome to the show where I help you, gen Xers and millennials, navigate spiritually through a world that looks nothing like we expected back, when cars were square and mullets were totally awesome.

00:01:05.551 --> 00:01:07.647
I am so glad you're here.

00:01:11.081 --> 00:01:20.974
So, when it comes to finding God's will, one of our main concerns is making the right decisions in accordance with His overall plan for our lives.

00:01:20.974 --> 00:01:29.031
Now, this includes not only the choices that we make for ourselves, but also the decisions we help our loved ones make.

00:01:29.031 --> 00:01:30.534
Now.

00:01:30.534 --> 00:01:48.534
These decisions can range from choosing a college major, or finding a spouse, or deciding on the number of children that we're going to have, or determining how to educate them, selecting a church to join, picking a place to live, even deciding on medical treatments.

00:01:48.534 --> 00:02:01.293
It's important to understand the importance of these matters and take them seriously, but it doesn't mean that we need to try to fully grasp God's mind in order to guarantee that we've made the correct choice.

00:02:01.293 --> 00:02:15.644
The truth is we can't fully understand God's mind, nor can we be aware of his hidden or decorative will, which is his sovereign, eternal plan for all creation.

00:02:15.644 --> 00:02:18.632
It's just beyond our comprehension.

00:02:18.632 --> 00:02:33.222
But what we can know is God's revealed or perceptive will, which is what he's shown us in Scripture about himself, his ways, his requirements for us.

00:02:33.222 --> 00:02:40.554
God's perceptive will instructs us on what's pleasing to him, according to his holy character.

00:02:40.554 --> 00:02:50.039
It provides us with guidelines and principles to follow in our decision-making.

00:02:50.039 --> 00:02:54.146
Understanding what we can and can't know about God's will frees us to make choices based on His Word.

00:02:54.167 --> 00:03:00.082
By consulting God's Word to help us make decisions, we learn to seek wisdom and guidance from the Lord through the Holy Spirit.

00:03:00.082 --> 00:03:15.834
We develop humility and holiness, and we get that through the Spirit's guidance, and we also seek advice and wisdom from our counselors and our elders, and we honor the wisdom and guidance of our parents.

00:03:15.834 --> 00:03:32.752
We consider our talents and our priorities and our resources as we look at all these different options and we learn not to pursue a path simply because it seems open, but we take the time to discern whether it aligns with God's revealed will.

00:03:32.752 --> 00:03:42.010
Sometimes we need to persist on our efforts, even when a door appears closed, and other times we need to wait on the Lord until our path becomes clear.

00:03:42.010 --> 00:03:53.548
Now Paul in Romans 12 says Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

00:03:53.548 --> 00:04:00.348
Then you'll be able to test and approve what God's will is his good, pleasing and perfect will.

00:04:00.348 --> 00:04:10.885
This verse encourages us to have a renewed mind that's not influenced by the world's values and patterns but seeks to align with God's will.

00:04:10.885 --> 00:04:19.826
It reminds us that by seeking God's will and aligning ourselves with his precepts, we can make decisions that please him.

00:04:19.826 --> 00:04:28.615
It should also remind us of a great podcast that uses Romans 12.2 as its base.

00:04:28.615 --> 00:04:31.846
Sorry, I had to throw that in.

00:04:31.846 --> 00:04:48.012
So, as you're seeking God's will and decision-making, it's not about trying to understand His hidden will, but it's about seeking His revealed or perceptive will through his word.

00:04:48.012 --> 00:05:08.774
This allows us to make choices based on his guidance, wisdom and his principles, by seeking wisdom from the Holy Spirit, seeking advice from wise counselors and considering our talents, our resources and our priorities, we can make choices that align with God's will.

00:05:08.774 --> 00:05:20.295
Ultimately, our goal should be to live a life that pleases God, according to His precepts, recognizing that His will is good and pleasing and perfect.

00:05:20.295 --> 00:05:26.841
So let's talk about defining God's will Now.

00:05:26.901 --> 00:05:40.514
Over time, many people struggled to understand what God's will is, and nowadays, when we talk about God's will, we often refer to things that are important to us, like our families, our jobs, our finances, our hobbies.

00:05:40.514 --> 00:05:53.533
But historically, theologians discussed God's will to explain things about God himself, like his nature, his freedom, sovereignty, his wisdom.

00:05:53.533 --> 00:06:01.692
Now, this wasn't meant to ignore life's big decisions, but rather to place them within the context of God's eternal purposes.

00:06:01.692 --> 00:06:13.533
Defining God's will is important for us Christians because it reveals who he is as the eternal, all-powerful and all-knowing God.

00:06:13.533 --> 00:06:25.105
I've heard God described as, or I've heard his will described as, the perfection of God, by which he seeks the highest good for himself and for his creation.

00:06:25.105 --> 00:06:31.014
Now, simply put, god's will can't be separated from God himself.

00:06:31.014 --> 00:06:34.668
His will is united because he is one.

00:06:34.668 --> 00:06:40.130
In essence, from our perspective, god's will reflects his character.

00:06:40.130 --> 00:06:43.247
It reveals his plan for creation.

00:06:43.247 --> 00:06:46.720
It reveals his plan for creation.

00:06:46.720 --> 00:06:54.603
It demonstrates his wisdom and his power in ordering everything that happens for our benefit and his glory.

00:06:54.622 --> 00:07:13.699
Deuteronomy 29.29 says the secret things belong to the Lord, our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever that we may do all the words of this law.

00:07:13.699 --> 00:07:21.300
This verse summarizes the covenant that God made with Israel through Moses, and it provides a framework for understanding God's divine will.

00:07:21.300 --> 00:07:24.529
The context of Deuteronomy is significant.

00:07:24.529 --> 00:07:30.845
Will the context of Deuteronomy is significant as the Lord prepares Joshua to lead Israel into the promised land.

00:07:30.845 --> 00:07:33.569
He emphasizes the importance of God's word in knowing his will.

00:07:33.569 --> 00:07:40.973
This was a message that Israel needed to hear, especially as they faced challenges and uncertainties.

00:07:40.973 --> 00:07:49.206
They needed to remember that obeying God's will was central for them to understand his will for their lives.

00:07:50.730 --> 00:08:00.673
Now, at the core of Deuteronomy 29, there's a distinction between the secret things that belong to God and the things that are revealed and accessible to us.

00:08:00.673 --> 00:08:14.860
This leads a lot of theologians to talk about God's secret will and his revealed will, and, although it may seem obvious, the distinction between the two is crucial for understanding God's will.

00:08:14.860 --> 00:08:21.600
There are many things that we, as humans, don't know because of our limitations.

00:08:21.600 --> 00:08:31.718
We don't know because of our limitations, but this can't be said of God, who is infinite and all-knowing.

00:08:31.718 --> 00:08:39.559
God's knowledge is perfect and his secret knowledge is beyond our comprehension.

00:08:39.559 --> 00:08:41.361
Now, in contrast to that, our knowledge is limited.

00:08:41.361 --> 00:08:48.813
As created beings, we depend on God to know His will, and when God reveals Himself in His Word, we can truly know His will.

00:08:48.813 --> 00:08:55.669
Although it's not comprehensive, god is the best interpreter of His own will.

00:08:55.669 --> 00:09:00.962
So this is why the things revealed in Scripture are so important.

00:09:00.982 --> 00:09:04.650
The Bible is God's self-written revelation in written form.

00:09:04.650 --> 00:09:25.688
Now, while we might not be able to understand everything about God's secret will, we can confidently know that his revealed will, through his word defining God's will.

00:09:25.688 --> 00:09:26.714
It's going to involve knowing and living according to his written word.

00:09:26.714 --> 00:09:34.602
And when we read the revealed will of God in scripture, we're going to learn about the distinctions between God's decretive will and perceptive will and the will of good pleasure.

00:09:34.602 --> 00:09:44.403
The decretive will refers to his wise and perfect plan, which ordains everything that happens.

00:09:44.403 --> 00:09:55.647
It highlights God's sovereignty over creation and redemption and history and providence, and it can't be thwarted you like that word thwarted?

00:09:55.647 --> 00:10:00.551
It can't be thwarted even by our sin and disobedience.

00:10:00.551 --> 00:10:07.793
This doesn't mean that God delights in sin, but he allows it to accomplish his purpose.

00:10:07.793 --> 00:10:24.062
God's perceptive will and his moral standard, which he requires all people to follow, tells us what God expects from us as his image bearers and what we should do, regardless of whether we actually do it.

00:10:24.062 --> 00:10:37.000
The perceptive will is summarized in the Ten Commandments no-transcript.

00:10:37.397 --> 00:10:42.948
Now, another related aspect is God's will of good pleasure, which has two parts.

00:10:42.948 --> 00:10:48.186
Firstly, it refers to God's pleasure in ordaining his sovereign plan.

00:10:48.186 --> 00:10:52.985
Secondly, it refers to God's delight when we obey his will.

00:10:52.985 --> 00:11:05.096
God is pleased when we do what he desires and he's displeased when we disobey desires and he's displeased when we disobey.

00:11:05.096 --> 00:11:10.187
These distinctions help us to understand the various aspects of God's will, but they don't imply competing or contradictory wills in God.

00:11:10.187 --> 00:11:14.480
His will reflects his single, unified plan.

00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:18.969
The crucifixion of Jesus is a great example of that.

00:11:18.969 --> 00:11:33.725
From the perspective of God's perceptive will, it was wrong to kill an innocent man, but from the perspective of his decorative will, it was part of his sovereign plan for redemption.

00:11:33.725 --> 00:11:41.842
And we also see God's will of good pleasure in His delight when we fulfill His will and displeasure when we disobey.

00:11:41.842 --> 00:11:48.410
When we face decisions, big or small, we shouldn't simply let go and let God.

00:11:48.410 --> 00:11:55.008
Trusting in God's will means actively relying on His wisdom and submitting to His word.

00:11:55.008 --> 00:12:10.938
While we may not be able to understand everything about God's secret will, we can be certain that His will involves pursuing holiness and expressing gratitude in every situation, instead of worrying about the future.

00:12:10.938 --> 00:12:15.708
Understanding God's will calls us to live obediently today.

This is Wisdom for the Day, your daily dose of Proverbs wisdom.

00:12:46.706 --> 00:12:55.697
Find us at wisdomforthedayorg Now.

00:12:55.716 --> 00:12:58.745
The big problem with God's will is our struggle to find it.

00:12:58.745 --> 00:13:02.602
What does God want me to do?

00:13:02.602 --> 00:13:06.081
Have you ever asked yourself that question?

00:13:06.081 --> 00:13:07.485
I have.

00:13:07.485 --> 00:13:15.985
A million times Today I've wondered do I live in the right place according to God's plan?

00:13:15.985 --> 00:13:18.701
Should I marry this person?

00:13:18.701 --> 00:13:23.225
Is this job the one God has chosen for me?

00:13:23.225 --> 00:13:34.203
Questions like this can be agonizing to answer because they carry so much significance and we crave certainty when it comes to making important decisions.

00:13:34.203 --> 00:13:36.028
Why?

00:13:36.028 --> 00:13:46.006
It's because lacking certainty makes us feel scared when we don't know what we're supposed to do next, we worry about making mistakes.

00:13:46.006 --> 00:13:48.162
It creates anxiety.

00:13:48.162 --> 00:13:54.067
In fact, even though we may not admit it, sometimes we're afraid that we might miss God's will.

00:13:56.395 --> 00:14:05.706
The struggle to find God's will is a struggle with certainty, and it's natural for us to seek as much certainty as possible when it comes to making decisions.

00:14:05.706 --> 00:14:13.605
And it certainly helps to make us feel in control, because when we feel in control, we feel safe.

00:14:13.605 --> 00:14:19.735
But seeking more certainty doesn't necessarily mean that we're in the wrong.

00:14:19.735 --> 00:14:21.458
Seeking more certainty doesn't necessarily mean that we're in the wrong.

00:14:21.458 --> 00:14:35.474
It's good for us to consider the consequences of our decisions, to seek good counsel, wise counsel, and pray for guidance.

00:14:35.474 --> 00:14:39.701
Sometimes, though, the desire for certainty can stem from a deeper desire to have more control for ourselves.

00:14:39.701 --> 00:14:46.642
Rather than trusting in God's control, we want God to give us exact directions so that we don't have to have faith.

00:14:46.642 --> 00:14:49.655
It would put our hearts at ease, wouldn't it?

00:14:49.655 --> 00:14:52.081
It kind of would mine.

00:14:52.081 --> 00:15:00.381
It's strange how a seemingly good desire to know God's will can sometimes be twisted into wanting more control for ourselves.

00:15:02.105 --> 00:15:03.727
Now, this reminds me of the Pharisees.

00:15:03.727 --> 00:15:13.529
They believed they were meticulously following God's plan by tithing even the smallest herbs like mint and cumin.

00:15:13.529 --> 00:15:16.042
That's from Luke 11, 42.

00:15:16.042 --> 00:15:24.414
Jesus criticized them for straining out a gnat but swallowing a camel Matthew 23, 24.

00:15:24.414 --> 00:15:30.827
They focused on the tiniest details, but they lacked faith in God.

00:15:30.827 --> 00:15:33.662
Jesus called them hypocrites.

00:15:33.662 --> 00:15:36.715
That's in Matthew 23, 27.

00:15:36.715 --> 00:15:46.244
They appeared righteous on the outside, but inside their hearts didn't trust God, despite their apparent desire to do His will.

00:15:48.456 --> 00:15:49.940
Now the story of the Pharisees.

00:15:49.940 --> 00:15:52.706
It serves as a cautionary tale for us Christians.

00:15:52.706 --> 00:15:58.748
We need to be careful that seemingly good desires don't come from sinful motivations.

00:15:58.748 --> 00:16:00.980
It's difficult.

00:16:00.980 --> 00:16:07.857
It's a difficult task that requires a deep soul searching.

00:16:07.857 --> 00:16:10.261
Were the Pharisees wrong to desire certainty?

00:16:10.261 --> 00:16:13.187
No, they weren't.

00:16:18.178 --> 00:16:26.921
We are certain about some aspects of God's will, like we know that he's commanded us to have compassionate hearts as his chosen ones Colossians 3.12.

00:16:26.921 --> 00:16:32.996
And we know that he's commanded us to love one another as he loves us that's John 15.12.

00:16:32.996 --> 00:16:36.422
And to rejoice in him always.

00:16:36.422 --> 00:16:38.424
Philippians 4.4.

00:16:38.424 --> 00:16:41.850
These are examples of God's will.

00:16:41.850 --> 00:16:54.424
He's also given us more specific instructions, like if we choose to get married, he calls us to marry somebody who shares our faith.

00:16:54.424 --> 00:17:00.294
1 Corinthians 7.39 and 2 Corinthians 6.14.

00:17:00.294 --> 00:17:04.246
He's also called us to work diligently.

00:17:09.596 --> 00:17:17.926
These passages and others reveal God's will to us, but a lot of times we seek something more specific, don't we?

00:17:17.926 --> 00:17:23.967
We're not always concerned about His moral will, his commandments.

00:17:23.967 --> 00:17:29.042
We want to know what to do next among several good options.

00:17:29.042 --> 00:17:37.647
God's moral will can provide us with more certainty about some choices, but it doesn't narrow it down to one specific choice.

00:17:37.647 --> 00:17:49.288
When we discuss specific choices that God has not yet revealed, we're referring to his secret will, the will that he has chosen not to reveal to us.

00:17:49.288 --> 00:18:03.368
God's secret will is mysterious and it encompasses everything that he hasn't disclosed regarding our personal decisions, our future and anything else that God keeps to himself.

00:18:03.368 --> 00:18:10.448
In the search for God's secret will, we often use a couple different methods.

00:18:10.448 --> 00:18:15.326
Sometimes we twist biblical principles for our own purposes.

00:18:15.326 --> 00:18:22.743
Seeking counsel for decisions is good Proverbs 11.14 and 15.22.

00:18:24.295 --> 00:18:28.181
Pastors, family members, friends.

00:18:28.181 --> 00:18:34.790
They can affirm and highlight God's love and guidance in specific situations and they can offer us valuable input.

00:18:34.790 --> 00:18:43.750
But instead of seeking wisdom from counselors, we sometimes use them as a means to find God's secret will.

00:18:43.750 --> 00:18:54.470
We treat our pastor's opinion as if it were God directly revealing his will to us, or trust that our friend has received a divine message.

00:18:56.276 --> 00:18:59.486
Prayer is another excellent, commendable practice.

00:18:59.486 --> 00:19:03.157
Prayer is another excellent, commendable practice, and we're called to ask for wisdom.

00:19:03.157 --> 00:19:07.241
1 Thessalonians 5.17 and James 1.5.

00:19:07.241 --> 00:19:25.103
We can and we should pray for directions, but sometimes Christians take it further and ask God for a specific sign, like receiving a phone call at an exact moment or coming across a billboard with a particular message on their daily commute.

00:19:25.103 --> 00:19:35.487
Now, these practices are often carried out with genuine desire to know God and to do His will, and many have made good decisions using these kind of methods.

00:19:35.487 --> 00:19:51.248
Their decisions may have turned out successfully after receiving confirmation of God's secret will through some kind of unusual circumstance, but seeking confirmation of God's will in these particular ways is not supported by Scripture.

00:19:52.695 --> 00:20:00.529
The Bible doesn't say that we can discover God's secret will through counselors or peaceful feelings or coincidences or any other means.

00:20:00.529 --> 00:20:11.094
Counselors or peaceful feelings or coincidences or any other means God's secret will, by its very nature, is hidden.

00:20:11.094 --> 00:20:16.094
Does this mean that God is distant from us because of our uncertainty?

00:20:16.094 --> 00:20:21.532
No, because uncertainty doesn't mean that God is distant.

00:20:21.532 --> 00:20:25.670
Think about the Israelites who felt uncertainty and fear when they were trapped at the Red Sea, with Pharaoh's armies closing in on them.

00:20:25.670 --> 00:20:29.143
That's Exodus 14, 10-14.

00:20:29.143 --> 00:20:33.243
Despite their uncertainty, god was with them.

00:20:33.243 --> 00:20:38.606
He protected them from the Egyptians and safely led them across the Red Sea.

00:20:38.606 --> 00:20:41.040
In the same way.

00:20:41.040 --> 00:20:49.358
We might feel uncertain about a particular decision or situation, but we can still rest in the knowledge that God is with us and we can trust Him.

00:20:49.358 --> 00:20:55.627
Even when he hasn't revealed exactly what to do, he's guiding our steps as we take them.

00:20:58.238 --> 00:21:05.226
I've met many older men and women in faith who look back on their lives and deeply understand how God was with them throughout their journey.

00:21:05.226 --> 00:21:13.886
Now, a lot of times, these seasoned people, these seasoned saints, are amazed at how God brought them to where they are.

00:21:13.886 --> 00:21:25.096
They recognize that they had very little to do with it, and even though they were making decisions constantly, I wonder if Abraham felt the same way when he reflected on his life.

00:21:25.096 --> 00:21:38.588
What comforts me about these stories is that it's a reminder to me that God is with us wherever we go, directing our steps, even when it may seem mysterious.

00:21:38.588 --> 00:21:45.163
Now, when we think about how God works in our lives, we're reminded that he calls us to have faith.

00:21:46.335 --> 00:21:48.723
Abraham was called to trust, just as we are.

00:21:48.723 --> 00:21:53.806
Faith is trusting in God and having certainty in him.

00:21:53.806 --> 00:21:57.363
This is what the Pharisees lacked.

00:21:57.363 --> 00:22:04.124
It wasn't a Pharisee who walked on water with Jesus, but just a simple fisherman.

00:22:04.124 --> 00:22:12.068
Peter stepped out in faith onto the Sea of Galilee and it was like solid ground beneath his feet.

00:22:12.068 --> 00:22:27.968
He had imperfect certainty in God and I wonder if he even knew that he was walking on water, because to do it he had to be so focused on Jesus.

00:22:27.968 --> 00:22:40.517
But when doubt crept in, when he took his eyes off Jesus, he turned back to the Lord and cried to him Save me.

00:22:40.517 --> 00:22:42.964
Matthew 1430.

00:22:42.964 --> 00:22:50.257
Jesus reached out to him and caught him and he said why did you doubt, dude?

00:22:50.257 --> 00:22:52.023
You were walking on water.

00:22:52.023 --> 00:22:54.621
Why did you doubt?

00:22:54.621 --> 00:23:00.878
And we always thought about that why did he doubt?

00:23:00.878 --> 00:23:01.863
Because he was doing it.

00:23:01.863 --> 00:23:04.262
But I think it was more simple than that.

00:23:04.262 --> 00:23:05.339
It was simpler than that.

00:23:05.339 --> 00:23:14.626
He was so focused on Jesus in that moment that he could have done anything, anything.

00:23:14.626 --> 00:23:19.826
But the moment he took his eyes off Jesus, he sank.

00:23:25.095 --> 00:23:28.683
To eliminate that struggle with uncertainty would mean eliminating the need for faith.

00:23:28.683 --> 00:23:33.576
We don't know everything that God knows, yet we're called to trust him.

00:23:33.576 --> 00:23:39.517
Even when we take steps that are uncertain, just like Peter, and when we do, god's going to be with us.

00:23:39.517 --> 00:23:44.087
Sometimes our decisions are going to seem like they lead to great success.

00:23:44.087 --> 00:23:48.665
Other times we may make what appears to be a mistake.

00:23:48.665 --> 00:24:00.046
We may experience doubt, but God has a unique way of turning our weakness into strength and making even our darkest situations work for our good.

00:24:00.046 --> 00:24:06.827
Just look at Genesis 50, 20 or 2 Corinthians, 12, 9.

00:24:06.827 --> 00:24:16.645
And when we cry out to him, like Peter, saying Save me, he's ready and willing to save us.
