A shaken priest, a startling angel, and a promise that refuses to fit inside human limits. We continue our Advent journey with Luke 1:5–25, walking through Zechariah’s encounter with Gabriel, the sign of silence, and Elizabeth’s unexpected joy. This is a story about more than a miraculous birth; it’s about how God prepares a people, turns hearts, and grows hope in places we had written off as barren.

I share the passage in full and unpack why the details matter: John’s consecration, his Spirit-filled calling from the womb, and his mission to turn fathers toward children and the rebellious toward wisdom. We talk about the shock of unbelief meeting divine certainty, and why Zechariah’s silence is both a discipline and a mercy. In a season crowded with noise, his quiet months invite us to practice attention, let go of control, and allow God’s word to take root. Elizabeth’s secluded gratitude reframes delay as kindness, reminding us that God’s timing often protects fragile beginnings while preparing the way for Jesus.

You’ll walk away with simple, grounded practices for Advent: show up to ordinary duties with expectant hearts, carve out strategic silence to deepen trust, and name God’s kindness in small beginnings. This reflection is for anyone who feels stuck between promise and fulfillment, who needs to remember that hope often grows offstage before it steps into the light. Stay watchful, stay holy, stay renewed with us as we lean into the story that changes every other story.

00:00:56.460 --> 00:00:59.420
Hey, welcome to Renewed Mindsets.

00:00:59.579 --> 00:01:02.219
I'm Rick, and I'm so glad you're here.

00:01:02.540 --> 00:01:04.299
But this is something special.

00:01:04.540 --> 00:01:15.180
For the next 25 days, we're going to slow down, we're going to quiet our hearts, and we're going to turn our eyes towards Jesus as we walk through Advent together.

00:01:15.420 --> 00:01:24.620
Now every day we'll take a few minutes to breathe and reflect and remember the hope that came into the world and the hope that's coming again.

00:01:28.700 --> 00:01:31.819
Hey, welcome back to Renewed Mindsets.

00:01:32.219 --> 00:01:35.659
Day nine of the Advent Bible reading.

00:01:35.979 --> 00:01:41.019
We are going to be in Luke chapter 1, verses 5 through 25.

00:01:41.500 --> 00:01:43.739
That's the promise to Zechariah.

00:01:44.140 --> 00:01:47.979
Of course, I'm Rick, and I'm so glad to be here.

00:01:48.539 --> 00:01:57.179
I hate it for y'all that Ashton and Lauren couldn't be here today, but I will have Ashton back tomorrow, I promise.

00:01:57.579 --> 00:02:00.299
So let's just get into the reading.

00:02:00.619 --> 00:02:03.340
The birth of John the Baptist foretold.

00:02:05.420 --> 00:02:10.460
When Herod was king of Judea, there was a Jewish priest named Zechariah.

00:02:10.860 --> 00:02:18.379
He was a member of the priestly order of Abijah, and his wife Elizabeth was also from the priestly line of Aaron.

00:02:18.860 --> 00:02:27.340
Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God's eyes, careful to obey all of the laws and the commandments and regulations.

00:02:28.060 --> 00:02:34.379
They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to conceive, and they were both very old.

00:02:34.859 --> 00:02:40.460
One day Zechariah was serving God in the temple, for his order was on duty that week.

00:02:40.780 --> 00:02:47.259
As was the custom of the priest, he was chosen by Lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense.

00:02:47.819 --> 00:02:53.099
While the incense was being burned, a great crowd stood outside praying.

00:02:53.500 --> 00:02:59.979
While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an angel of the Lord appeared to him standing to the right of the incense altar.

00:03:00.460 --> 00:03:04.699
Zechariah was shaken and overwhelmed with fear when he saw him.

00:03:05.020 --> 00:03:08.299
But the angel said, Don't be afraid, Zechariah.

00:03:08.780 --> 00:03:10.620
God has heard your prayer.

00:03:10.859 --> 00:03:15.419
Your wife Elizabeth will give you a son, and you are to name him John.

00:03:16.139 --> 00:03:23.900
You will have great joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord.

00:03:24.219 --> 00:03:28.299
He must never touch wine or other alcoholic drinks.

00:03:28.620 --> 00:03:36.539
He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth, and he will turn many Israelites to the Lord their God.

00:03:37.180 --> 00:03:40.859
He will be a man with the spirit and the power of Elijah.

00:03:41.180 --> 00:03:52.460
He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord, he will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly.

00:03:53.740 --> 00:03:58.379
Zechariah said to the angel, How can I be sure all this will happen?

00:03:58.539 --> 00:04:03.340
I'm an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years.

00:04:04.060 --> 00:04:09.819
Then the angel said, I am Gabriel, I stand in the very presence of God.

00:04:10.219 --> 00:04:25.180
It was he who sent me to bring you this good news, but now since you didn't believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the child is born, for my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time.

00:04:25.980 --> 00:04:32.300
Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah to come out of the sanctuary, wondering why he was taking so long.

00:04:32.620 --> 00:04:35.980
When he finally did come out, he couldn't speak to them.

00:04:36.220 --> 00:04:42.700
Then they realized from his gestures and his silence that he must have seen a vision in the sanctuary.

00:04:43.100 --> 00:04:47.980
When Zechariah's week of service in the temple was over, he returned home.

00:04:48.220 --> 00:04:54.700
Soon afterward his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and went into seclusion for five months.

00:04:55.020 --> 00:04:57.740
How kind the Lord is, she exclaimed.

00:05:02.220 --> 00:05:03.660
I love reading that.

00:05:03.900 --> 00:05:08.300
It's such a good, solid story in the Bible.

00:05:09.260 --> 00:05:14.220
And I love the fact that he didn't get cut any slack.

00:05:14.620 --> 00:05:16.780
He's just like, nah, you're not gonna speak now.

00:05:16.939 --> 00:05:19.580
You didn't believe me once, too bad for you.

00:05:19.980 --> 00:05:21.500
Anyway, it's great.

00:05:21.660 --> 00:05:22.620
I love it.

00:05:22.939 --> 00:05:24.460
Tomorrow is gonna be a lot of fun.

00:05:24.620 --> 00:05:26.380
We'll be in Luke again.

00:05:27.340 --> 00:05:35.020
And uh we're really getting into the birth of Jesus in the Advent timeline.

00:05:35.500 --> 00:05:38.060
So until then, I love you.

00:05:38.860 --> 00:05:40.540
Check back with us tomorrow.

00:05:40.780 --> 00:05:43.260
I'm pretty sure it's gonna be Ashton.

00:05:43.580 --> 00:05:46.460
But if not, you'll deal with me again.

00:05:46.780 --> 00:05:48.780
We all know how wonderful that is.

00:05:49.100 --> 00:05:50.780
Anyway, y'all have a great day.

00:07:00.700 --> 00:07:03.420
Thanks for joining me today on Renewed Mindsets.

00:07:03.580 --> 00:07:07.580

Let's stay watching, praying, and keeping our hearts ready for the one who came and the one who's coming again soon.

00:07:15.580 --> 00:07:16.540
I love you.

00:07:16.860 --> 00:07:21.340

00:07:29.020 --> 00:07:35.740

00:07:35.900 --> 00:07:37.900
The time to wake up is now.

00:07:38.300 --> 00:07:42.300
If today's episode challenged you, don't keep it to yourself.
